I know we would rather talk about pleasant things. We would rather find a funny post, or feel-gooder post. Its very easy to detach ourselves from Mathare.
There is no doubt that Mungiki have terrorized residents , butchering them as we have seen in the news. Well, it is also true that police brutality is back with a vengeance. Pray do tell, why was the woman who was carrying her baby clubbed till she bled? What happened to a court of law? Who said if the Mungiki are barbaric then the Kenya police should take on the same? Another thing, tell me why would the government support Mungiki when they have so much to lose from that with elections just around the corner.
I daresay, Mungiki might have had some friends at one time in govt. , but have now got out of hand. I would even venture to say that the Mungiki are not as organized as we are being led to believe-- they are no mafia.
Apart from the dailies, there are some interesting reads on kenyaImagine on the Mungiki. Take a minute to check them out. The New York Times has a slideshow on the police hitting Mathare.

I've spent most of my evening reading up info about this tyrant lot. I'm buffled to say the least. My readings got me to this interesting site...http://www.rickross.com/groups/mungiki.html
Things are looking really thick now to say the least! The government has no response other than brute force, this could have been nipped in the bud a long time ago but nothing was done so look at what we have to deal with, rather sad to say the least.
On to Aco's point, the government probably tought this was just a passing fad amongst disgruntled youth. This has now come home to roost in a very sad way.
This organisation should have been nipped in the bud a long time ago but the government was a lot wishy washy about it - rhetorically addressed it as being illegal and such silliness, instead of acting on them, now its back and its such a pest that they are trying to squash with a big club, without finesse and of course there is going to be collateral damage. Cops a being killed left right and centre, not sure by the adherents or other parties and this of course makes them act out in anger and frustration, making them less effective as the guardians of the law.
@quinn--> thanks for the link
@aco--> yes, it can only be termed as such-brute force!
@egm--> mbona hawakufanya chochote all these years!!
@agiasi--> kwanza, isn't it past your bedtime? more than collateral damage. some of those jamaas being killed are not even Mungiki!
Your are right some of us would rather something more pleasant but then again this is reality that there are people in Kenya who are literaly living in fear of being beheaded or mashed to a pulp by the cops. None of these things are right, I don't have much sympathy for mungiki, but clobering indiscriminately doesnt endear the police to the public who are supposed to help them. Our country needs prayers.
our Government is totally clue less about what to do: and Kibs just keeps saying "tunawajua ware ware" so if munawajua, why on earth are women with babies being clubbed? sorry state of affairs!
It is sad that it has reached such a point. And this might be one of the few times that Kenyan Police could get away with such brutality given the national security threat that Mungiki poses for all Kenyans.
What is happening is quite horiffic to say the least!!
@Kirima-- the govt has a higher calling- that to protect its people from terrorists whether Mungiki or the Kenya Police.
@HnH--> exactly my question. Kibs govt is really getting embarrassed.
@3N--> ditto. its like immediately after 9/11 Bush got away with a lot including the damn Patriot's Act and Guatanamo Bay)
@princess--> indeed!
what i want ...
is Mungiki CLOBBERED ... smothered o pulp!! They must not have a safe haven ANYWHERE ... and collateral damage will be inevitable if this is 2 be achieved ... and yes ... I realize that none of my family are being touched as part of this "collateral" ... but we cannot have a perfect scenario ... th epolice HAVE TO BE merciless, raise the social transaction cost of joining such cults ...
I was so sad as I watched poor innocent mwananchi being caught in the middle of all that!
How the police handled that Mathare crackdown was so sad n unrespectful of their H/rights, The gorvnt seems to be gettin desperate n yet it has all the power n force to completely bring this group down..
I hate it when politicians start there usual blame game n not deal with the main issue here..Rising Insecurity in the Country!
on that point Doesn't Kenya just need prayers??
My fear is that so many innocent people will be killed in the name of Mungiki. God help us.
Mwangi, you said it.. ur family won't be hurt... that's what you think. This is the kind of things civil wars are made of!! The police do not need to be merciless... and Kibaki should never have let it get out of hand.
Prayers? I think hundreds of Kenyans have been praying for a long time for a better life, wapi? What we need is action and change in our political system.
